In spring, a thin, bell-shaped flower with purple-yellow and yellow spots of up to 20 cm sprouts from the underground tuber. After flowering, it usually produces only one large palm leaf with spotted petiole. The overground part dies away in autumn, but the tubers will be preserved over the winter. The tubers of older plants are frost-resistant up to -18°C. It grows at an altitude of between 1300 and 2000 meters in the regions of Africa and Asia.
