A medium-sized tree with large oval leaves. White to yellow flowers, dark in the middle, smell nicely and delicately. Edible fruits 9 to 15 cm long have, which have a thin leathery skin and can be eaten raw or used to make jams, beverages or ice cream. Brazilian farmers produce syrup, an alcohol-free drink (called genipapada), wine and a strong liqueur. Juice from the immature fruit becomes blacky if it is dropped on skin and in the past was used for tattooing (temporary tattoos). It comes from tropical forests of Central and South America.
